Timing can be crucial in a child’s life when it comes discovering something they’ll latch on to forever. For me it was the Seoul Olympics, when I was eight years old. I remember being absolutely blown away by the tumbling and saying to my mum: “I want to do that.”
When my mother realised I was serious, she took me to the local gymnastics club in Blackpool – as much to save our sofas from being used as crash mats as anything else.
